Institutional Complementarities
Abstract
The analysis of institutional complementarities helps to capture the relations existing among different spheres of the economy. In this lecture we will distinguish among different types of institutional complementarities. We will start by considering the institutional complementarities stemming from social scarcity and, in particular, those existing among different legal positions. We will then move to analyze "weaker" cases of institutional complementarities and, in particular, those linking the following domains:
- property rights and technology
- finance and technology
- intellectual property rights and human skills
We will conclude by showing how the analysis of institutional complementarities can help to understand the characteristics of alternative models of capitalism and explain some aspects of their relative performance in the global economy.
