The Political Economy of Underdevelopment

Abstract

This workshop explores the ways through which political institutions affect the policymaking process and determine the characteristics of policies that emerge. Whether a country is able to arise from underdevelopment is crucially dependent on the characteristics of polices that its policymaking process systematically produces. The workshop will focus on recent literatures that analyze how the choice of producing public goods versus private goods and/or corruption is determined by political institutions. Theoretical and empirical approaches to mapping from political institutions to policy outcomes will be explored.
