Data governance, data markets

Abstract

This lecture will explore the economic characteristics of data and their implications for data organizations and data markets. We will distinguish between data and information goods and highlight why data cannot be "owned" and why data are "inalienable" from the original source or object of data. The lack of ownership for data goods leads to particular forms of data governance and data trading. Together with inalienability, data rights (as opposed to intellectual property rights) highlight provenance at the center of ongoing efforts to design efficient multilateral markets for data.
