Recent Empirical Finding on the Political Economy of Regulation and Procurement

Abstract

Regulatory agencies and procurement offices are agencies in charge of operating regulations and public acquisitions of goods/services whose aim is to act in the public interest. However, given the high stakes involved in public decisions, they attract the attention of rent-seekers who want to ally with politicians and key decision-makers to obtain favorable governmental decisions. A regulatory capture occurs when the interests of firms or political groups are prioritized over the interests of the public, leading to a net loss to society as a whole. The aim of workshop is to present and discuss the most recent empirical studies on political economy, particularly on regulatory capture, and its link with regulation and procurement in a broad sense.
