Corporate Purpose
Abstract
This session examines corporate purpose from the perspective of law, organizations, and economics. We will explore the history and current debates within law on the corporate form's intended purpose, together with the parallel development in organizational sociology on corporate purpose (e.g., Follett, Barnard, and Selznick). We then draw on those insights to consider the role of purpose for the theory of the firm within economics, considering implications for boundaries, internal organization, and managerial practices. The session aims to stimulate a broader discussion on the role and implications of corporate purpose across these disciplinary boundaries and pathways for future research in this area.
